The Bible As A Book From Living Springs' Questions and Answers
About This Series

This series is an ongoing series appearing in Living Springs Institute's bimonthly publication, Shaqah, beginning with issue #42. Segments of the series are presented here as parts. Each part contains the writing that appeared in a single issue of Shaqah. They are presented here without modification, just as they appeared in each of their respective issues of Shaqah. However, for convenience, each part has been republished in its own independent PDF file so you can read, save, and print them as you may desire.

Shaqah is an excellent way to keep up with this series as it continues to be published. Shaqah is also the way to read further in the series than this series' page may allow for a time. If you find a series' part is listed as under construction, you can still read that part by looking it up in Shaqah. All back issues of Shaqah can be found on our website, and all you need to do is click on the Shaqah issue listed for "The Bible As A Book" part that is under construction.

Also, if you come to the last part listed on this page, you can look to see if the issue number of Shaqah listed for that part is the most current issue published.

Introduction

"The Bible As A Book" lays out many facts about the Bible, including things not necessarily in the Bible, but all things which are important to our confidence that we are receiving the truth while reading our Bible. As the title indicates, this series is all about the Bible as it stands today in the book form many of us know It as. The series is based on a question submitted to Living Springs Institute, "How were the Books of the Bible Named? Who named the Books? Who Wrote each Book? and Why are the Books in the order that they are in our Bibles?"

The series starts by talking about the Bible as a whole, covering topics such as why we have a written Word at all, why it is so important to our lives, and how we should view its divisions. The series moves forward taking a specific look at each book, and facts about their names, time periods, etc. As with any series that is in progress, we can not specifically say just all of what this series will cover in the end. However, Part I does talk about the general outline of topics and facts it intends to cover, and serves as a good introduction to the concepts of the series as a whole!

In covering Israel's journey, it talks about the resistance Israel faced from the people living in the region, both those people related to them as well as those of true Canaanite blood. Part L continues the overview of the Book of Dueteronomy. In this segment, we see Moses challenges the nation to think about all they had gone through on their journey to this point. He specifically goes over the Ten Commandments, how they were given, and the result of the nation literally hearing God's voice. He also reminds them about what they had chosen to do as he was on the mount receiving the Laws of God, and how that resulted in him having to plead with God for their lives. Moses intermingles this with instructions about how they were to enter and claim the land, not just in needing to trust God to defeat the people who now lived there but in how to cleanse the land and live on it generation after generation. By speaking of what they had been through alongside what they were now to do, Moses continues to prepare the nation to enter the promised land.

Part LVI This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #100, Jan. & Feb. 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LVI finishes our overview of the Book of Deuteronomy. In this part we talk about the last few details of Moses' life. In talking about this, it goes into a great discussion concerning false religion and how one gets started as well as why. In spite of being the ending section of an overview, it goes into a more extensive discussion as to why Moses was not allowed to enter the promised land and covers some important aspects to the nation concerning this, which are not often talked about. In the end it talks about how the ministry work of Moses was truly passed to Joshua, and this closes our direct look at the Book of Deuteronomy.

The Bible As A Book Part LVII
Part LVII This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #101, March & April 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LVII is the true transition segment between the end of our look at the Torah and the next section of books which make up God's Word. This part mostly goes into the fact here at the end of the Torah is a real transition in the Bible but not in the way God would save us. In making that point it also discusses Dispensationalism, which is a teaching that attempts to break the Bible's story into segments of time that are in most people's minds very much about how our mode of salvation changed. This part goes step by step through the main points of Dispensationalism. It talks about how these really changed nothing about salvation, but only served to show us the fact God still cares to continue His real intention for human existence. Thus, salvation through His grace was never to become something unavailable to all men.

Part LVIII This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #102, May & June 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LVIII continues the transition from talking about the Torah to talking about the books of history in the Hebrew Bible, and begins the lead-in to a full discussion about the history books. In truth, it covers a significant amount of subject matter, as it speaks heavily to the point of how much what we see, in not just the remaining books after the Torah but the New Testament as well, is only looked at correctly if we see them through the perspective of the Torah. For this, it begins with a discussion on what Christians call the Last Supper. From there, we go into talking about how we should view the way God judged the nation of Israel from the start, and how we see that change a bit and why. This part ends by talking about the value in how we see the separation of books in the Hebrew Bible, and leads into a discussion concerning the difference between how the Jews do it versus the Christians.

Part LIX This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #103, July & Aug. 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LIX begins a look at the historical books of the Bible. However, it does not do so by jumping right into the subject of each book, but rather it talks more about the differences between how Christians look at the books versus how Jews look at them. In doing this it talks about the name Jews give the Hebrew Bible and why. Then it goes into a comparison as to why we can not follow the same way of studying the Bible by going with both the Christian divisions of the books at the same time as looking at the Jews'. This has to do with the fact the Jews do not just arrange them differently, but a main subject of this part of the study goes into talking about the Jewish division that follows the Torah, what it consists of, and why just in that set of books we see a very different arrangement than in the Christian way of putting the Bible Itself together.

Part LX This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #104, Sept. & Oct. 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LX begins our look at the Book of Joshua. The part introduces the book by talking mostly about how we should see it. Along with that comes a lot of discussion concerning what prophecy is and what leadership is or should be. From that viewpoint, it covers a lot of ground about how much the religion of Christianity has gotten off base from where and what it should be founded on and what individuals should do about it. By the end of this segment one should have a more thorough thought of what God wanted Joshua to do; what we see happen in the book; and a better perspective on what leadership truly should be.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #105, Nov. & Dec. 2019 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LXI continues our look at the Book of Joshua. This part starts by talking about what if Israel had gone into the land when God asked them to. This leads into the discussion about the basic facts of the Book of Joshua that we cover for each individual book of the Bible. It talks about the name of the book which might seem obvious, but in relationship to prophets this part points out a lot of information many do not think about. From there it talks about who wrote the book and what time there is between the end of Deuteronomy and the beginning of Joshua. This part ends by covering more interesting facts about how prophets worked in Israel as it discusses the amount of time the book covers overall.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #106, Jan. & Feb. 2020 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LXII begins the verse by verse overview of the Book of Joshua. It starts with the encouragement of Joshua to lead the nation and the sending of spies into the land, specifically Jericho. From there it covers the crossing of the Jordan which would be Israel's true entrance into the part of the land God had always been leading them to. It discusses how God wanted to totally shake the nation loose from Egypt, as well as their time of wandering and traveling from there. For this we cover the circumcision of all the males; the holding of the Passover for the first time in the heart of the land; and how the manna Israel had depended on all this time came to an end. This part also covers the details of how they were instructed to take Jericho and goes into the beginnings of that story.

Part LXIII continues our overview of the Book of Joshua. In this segment we cover the final parts of the battle against Jericho that Israel fought which in many ways was not a battle at all. It covers the details about Rahab and her family being the only ones spared out of Jericho. From there it follows the verses into Israel's next battle which was a defeat at Ai. It discusses how much this was a shock to the nation and how Joshua went before the tabernacle to ask God for the answers. In covering this we talk about how we should approach God and the answer God gave Joshua as to why they were defeated. This segment ends with the children of Israel preparing for what they would need to do in order to see success in God once again giving them the victory.

Part LXIV continues our overview of the Book of Joshua. This part begins by talking about how the sin which kept Israel from taking the city of Ai was dealt with. From there it goes into the story of how Israel eventually took Ai. After that we see Israel accomplishing the ceremony God had given to Moses for the nation to do after they entered the promised land. The bulk of this segment talks about the amazing way Israel began to take the land in a sweeping fashion following Ai's defeat. In covering this it also talks about how the people in the land responded to Israel, and in doing so contains a couple of the most unique stories of Israel's taking of the promised land.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #109, July & Aug. 2020 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LXV continues our overview of the Book of Joshua. This part begins by telling us how Israel continued to take the land of promise, specifically the northern portion as well as some clean up in the south. From there it talks about how Joshua was getting on in years and it was time to divide the land between the tribes. As it discusses the borders of each tribe's land, starting with that on the east side of Jordan, we see specific stories. Thus, this part covers the promise made to Caleb being fulfilled as well as the first setting up of the tabernacle on the west side of Jordan. It also shows us how Israel was already failing to drive out all the Canaanites and how that caused specific issues right from the start. This part was given a map to help follow all the information, and that map can be found as part of the PDF for Shaqah #109.

Part LXVI This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Appeared in Shaqah Issue #110, Sept. & Oct. 2020 This symbol means the link is to a PDF file.

Part LXVI continues our overview of the Book of Joshua. In this part we continue looking at how Joshua wanted the tribes who had not yet received a portion of land to do the work of defining land for each of their tribes. Its main focus on that issue is how the land of promise should have been much bigger than it was but wasn't, due to the tribes not fully following the Lord's instructions in the matter and ending up with much smaller portions of land than they should have. After the issue of divisions is settled, this part covers the establishment of the cities of refuge as God had told Moses would be needed once the nation was in the land. It goes on to cover the cities the Levites received among the tribes since they were not to be given a specific division of land. In all, this part wraps up the section of the Book of Joshua that concerned the direct taking of the promised land, and it ends with Joshua telling the men from the tribes on the east of Jordan they could go home.
